Valve detailed their plans for an improved download system for Steam over the weekend in a post onSteam, saying that “soon, Dota 2 will be delivered using it.” When Dota 2 was announced last October, Valve slated it for release this year. Since then there’s been very little information beyond the impressive character art, but we may see a lot more shortly. Valve are listed to show an unnamed strategy game at Gamescom next month, and developer IceFrog has said in a Q&A that at some stage “there will certainly be an opportunity to get involved with beta testing Dota 2.” We’ll have to wait and see what Valve show in Cologne on August 17.

Valve has posted information about "The International" Dota 2 tournament going on at Gamescom this week, but a bunch of news about lucky Gamescom attendees playing the game isn't nearly as exciting as, you know, playing the game yourself. Along with the tourney schedule, Valve has opened up beta registration to the public for Dota 2.

Dota 2 (Defense of the Ancients 2) is an upcoming action fantasy strategy video game being developed by Valve Corporation. It is the stand-alone sequel to the popular Warcraft III custom map Defense of the Ancients. The title was formally announced on October 13, 2010 via the Game Informer website.[2] The game currently is scheduled for a full release in 2012, with a public beta scheduled for the fall of 2011.[3] The game will be released through both retail and download by Valve's content delivery platform Steam, which the game has been developed to exclusively run on for both game launch and update delivery. Dota 2 will operate on Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X.[2]
The game is comprised exclusively of session-based online multiplayer activity, with the primary objective of each match being for the teams to destroy their opposing team's fortified stronghold called an Ancient Fortress. Each player assumes the role of a "hero", who is given the responsibility of participating in team combat, which generally takes place along a series of lanes that connect their opposing bases, lined with defensive towers. The gameplay elements are largely incorporated from Defense of the Ancients, with the game's lead designer (known only as "IceFrog") being the longest-serving and current developer of the Warcraft III mod.[2] Dota 2 marks Valve's first fantasy, as well as Action RTS game.
